Building of Sankyo Pharma GmbH
Building of Sankyo Pharma in Munich, Germany

At the end of the Second World War, business activities had to be halted for several weeks. But, in a matter of months, Luitpold-Werk had managed to master the difficult post-war business environment. In the 1950s and 1960s, Luitpold established new offices in Munich and new production facilities in Pfaffenhofen. From 1962 onwards, the company also increased its international presence and established affiliates in Brazil, Spain, Switzerland and Italy. Moreover, a second production site was built in Altkirch, France. At that time, this site was one of the most modern facilities in the Alsace region, and it had received several awards for its high environmental standards.

From 1981 to 1986, the establishment of subsidiaries in the United States, Portugal and the United Kingdom further increased Luitpold’s international presence. Still managed by the founding family, Luitpold had no successor in place to take over the family business. As a result, the founder’s two sons decided in 1990 to sell the company to the Japanese pharmaceutical manufacturer Sankyo. The Japanese company then benefited from Luitpold’s strong sales network and local know-how in the development and production of pharmaceuticals. By this time, the Luitpold product portfolio comprised digestive enzymes, pain killers, contraception drugs and a range of ointments. In 1997, Luitpold-Werk was renamed Sankyo Pharma.
